EMDR

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from different treatment approaches.

How does EMDR work?

EMDR therapy is an integrative psychotherapy and uses a technique called bilateral stimulation to repeatedly activate opposite sides of the brain. Therapists often use eye movements to facilitate the bilateral stimulation. These eye movements mimic the period of sleep referred to as rapid eye movement or REM sleep, and this portion of sleep is frequently considered to be the time when the mind processes the recent events in the person’s life.

EMDR seems to help the brain reprocess the trapped memories is such a way that normal information processing is resumed. Therapists often use EMDR to help clients uncover and process beliefs that developed as the result of relational traumas, or childhood abuse and/or neglect. Client experiences of EMDR with Meredith

"It will be hard for me to truly encapsulate, with mere words, how transformative working with Meredith has been for my life.  In January of 2023, I reached out to Meredith regarding the potential of doing EMDR work to reprocess unresolved childhood and adult trauma that I knew was affecting my life - personally and professionally. Meredith was the perfect guide - gentle yet effective- and was able to direct me through EMDR and reprocessing in a way that made me feel safe and most importantly, not alone.  Through our work together, Meredith was able to help me identify not only the spoken areas of trauma that I shared with her openly, but also deep, unspoken areas of my life that had been hidden since childhood.  Working through the trauma in my life with Meredith has been the most freeing and healing gift I’ve ever given myself.

I can not recommend working with Meredith enough and can assure you that making the investment to work on your mental health and unresolved trauma with Meredith, will be transformational for your life as it has been for mine."

"Before EMDR I struggled with being able to see and understand the place where I wanted to be mentally and emotionally, but just could not get there on my own. My brain felt scattered and split in two trying to process and absorb all I had experienced. Simply put, I just felt overloaded. EMDR helped my brain break through and process my experiences. I didn’t feel divided and fearful anymore. It helped bring so much understanding and grace to all I had been through. It immediately (like by the end of the session) felt like I had been on a week long vacation and completely relaxed and unplugged. In the longer term I struggled less and less with thoughts of impending doom and no longer had night terrors. I cannot recommend this therapy or Meredith enough. She and EMDR have given me a quality of life I know I would not have had otherwise."
